Marlin and more Marlin!!! It is going crazy everywhere... There is great fishing going on right now down south as well as a here in the Jaco/Los Suenos area. Out of Golfito, Bobby reported raising 20 in his last trip and he had a blast releasing as many as the clients could pull-in. There has been some Tuna in close popping as well, so everyone has had a cooler full of Yellow fin. I recommend you hurry and get in-touch with us for a Marlin trip that you will never forget.
We are hard at work putting our Vacation Rental pages together and should be there in a couple more weeks, so please keep an eye out for them as there will be a few of my hand picked Hotels listed as well as Condo's and Private Villas both on Jaco Beach, Los Suenos Marina area, and the rest of Costa Rica too.
Don't forget that we are now online at our NEW DOMAIN: www.GoFishCostaRica.com.

June Fishing Report

It took a couple weeks for the fishing and the water to get back to almost normal after tropical Storm Alma pounded Costa Rica at the end of May.

We had more than 2 feet of rain that week and it turned the ocean a muddy brown. Sometimes when we get heavy rains followed by hot sunshine we are prone to getting an algae bloom in the water that’s called “Red Tide”.

The Red Tide started down by Dominical and within a week had moved into the Jaco area. The Red Tide is never good for fisherman…but the impact has been less than expected. Boats are still going out and guys were still catching fish.

RJ Lilley had an interesting day on the beach. He caught a 10 pound snook on a crappie jig fishing in the river mouth in Jaco. Moments later RJ had a save a drunk lady that tried to cross the river mouth not realizing it had been washed out by the rain and in now 8 feet deep with strong currents. Way to go Reggie…karma points.

Captain Kevin on the “Hoo’s your Daddy” has been banging around the inshore rocks all week and picking up good numbers. The highlight of the week was probably the 125 plus pound goliath grouper they caught on a butterfly jig. Yesterday Captain Kevin caught a nice cubera, a mackerel, a couple roosterfish and a half a dozen big jack crevelle. Today they caught a 50 plus pound Cubera and 4 Roosterfish with one of them being in the 70 pound range.

Captain Jerry on the Estrella del Mar took a group offshore because they wanted Tuna. Jerry fished out by the craters and caught 2 big Mahi Mahi in the 45 pound range, a sailfish, a striped marlin and a 50 pound yellowfin tuna. That group ate well for a few days.

Captain RJ has had a good week…on Monday he took a family out that had never fished…they ended the day with 2 big wahoo, 5 nice yellowfin tuna and a 700 plus pound black marlin…once again the area around the “26″ produces a big marlin. RJ followed that up the next day with 7 roosterfish, 6 nice tuna and a 40 pound wahoo.

The guys on the “R&J” did a 1/2 day inshore trip with some friends and caught a half dozen roosterfish not far from the marina.

Captain Brandon on the Fish Whistle has been fishing up in the gulf and having good luck on the inshore and bottom fishing. Brandon has been using butterfly jigs in 60 - 80 feet of water and has been catching some big sea bass, roosterfish, snapper and groupers.

Captain RJ on the Predator has been at the rock almost everyday the past week. They have been averaging 5 or 6 fish a day including some 35 pound wahoo, some 25 pound tuna, some 20 pound mahi mahi and a 400 plus pound black marlin. The big marlin hit a ballyhoo while trolling for wahoo. As most marlin will do he put on a good air show with some great leaps. One of the leaps was too close for comfort when mr marlin almost landed in the boat. The big fish slammed into the boat tower just a couple feet from the captain and clients. RJ said it was like being hit by another boat and they were lucky no one was hurt.

Captain Dave on the Missbehavin took a group out to the rock and caught 6 nice wahoo and several 25 pound yellowfin tuna.

July Fish Forecast --

Look for July to be similar to the end of June. Hopefully the Red Tide will clear out so things can get back to normal.

Expect the 26 rock and inshore rocks to be fished hard as guys try and put clients on some fish.

When boats go offshore the tuna bite will be good if the foreign fishing fleet will stop fishing inside the legal boundary. The big foreign owned tuna boats seem to be more aggressive than ever and I predict more “run ins” with sport fisherman in the near future.

The mahi mahi fishing should also be good around the trash/current lines and the sailfish and marlin bite should be average for this time of year.

They boats may need to run farther until the chocolate brown water disappears…look for the bite to past 30 miles.

July Fish of the Month – Yellowfin Tuna

Over the next few months there should be good numbers of Yellowfin Tuna caught on the Pacific coast. Tuna are one of the oceans most prized fish. Fishing boats from all over the come to Costa Rican waters to fish tuna…sometimes legally and sometimes illegally.

Yellowfin Tuna are caught throughout the year on the Central Pacific coast. It’s not uncommon to pick up a 100 plus pound Yellowfin when fishing for Sailfish. The big Tuna come and go all year long but June through September are normally the best months for 200 pounders.

Tuna are generally caught 10-30 miles out. Yellowfin will bite on the same lures and ballyhoo rigs that are used to catch Sailfish. Tuna are usually found feeding with Dolphins especially Spinner Dolphins. If you can find feeding dolphins you can target tuna with cedar plugs and deeper running trolling lures like the green machine. Live bait is best for the big Tuna…get in front of the feeding pack and drop your live bait down and hold on.

If you are targeting Tuna make sure you bring some wasabi paste and soy sauce with you on the boat. Few things can compare with eating fresh sashimi caught an hour ago. A couple cold beers and you’re set.

Send me your reports and photos today!!!

Good Luck and Good Fishing,

Costa Rica Fishing Report - Los Suenos - Fishing returns to normal

Howdy,

There has been some red tide move into the area the past week but it hasn't hurt the fishing as much as expected. There were a couple days that were slow but for the most part everyone has been catching some fish.

The 26 rock has been hot with this past week good numbers of wahoo, tuna, dorado and a nice marlin being caught.

Captain RJ on the Predator has been at the rock almost everyday the past week. They have been averaging 5 or 6 fish a day including some 35 pound wahoo, some 25 pound tuna, some 20 pound mahi mahi and a 400 plus pound black marlin. I heard the news of RJ's marlin before he was back at the marina. The big marlin hit a ballyhoo while trolling for wahoo. As most marlin will do he put on a good air show with some great leaps. One of the leaps was too close for comfort when mr marlin almost landed in the boat. The big angry fish slammed into the boat tower just a couple feet from the captain and clients. RJ said it was like being hit by another boat and they were lucky no one was hurt.

Captain Dave on the Missbehavin took a group out to the rock and caught 6 nice wahoo and several 25 pound yellowfin tuna.

Captain Jeremy and the guys on the Desperado went way out a few days ago...they ran out 50 miles for a 35 pound mahi mahi...luckily the guys on The Bite found the tuna and contacted Jeremy. They picked up and ran 15 miles to join the tuna bite and caught some nice fish. Most of the fish were in the 35-45 pund range...they did have one hogg on that was estimated at over 100 pounds, that fish was lost.

Thanks and good luck,

Bubba

May Fishing Report

May is a transition month for the weather in Costa Rica and the last week in May proved it. The first three weeks of the month started out like April ended. The bite was average with most boats catching a few sailfish, a few mahi mahi and maybe even getting a shot at a marlin or tuna.

But then the rains came and kept almost everyone from fishing the final week of May. The storms pounded the fleet in Quepos sinking a dozen boats. Some of the nicest boats in Quepos were no match for Mother Nature.

Captain Carlos on the “R&J” had a great day with 4 Sailfish, a Stripe Marlin, a Blue Marlin, a Yellowfin Tuna and a Dorado….That’s a super slam in CR I think. Then today they went 3 for 5 on Sailfish and caught a nice Dorado….they were fishing out by the craters.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” Caught 2 Sailfish, a Striped Marlin a few Tuna and a Dorado.

Captain Brandon on the “Fish Whistle” caught a Sailfish, a Blue Marlin, a Striped Marlin, a Yellowfin Tuna and three 50 pound Dorados.

Captain Dana on the “Hoos your Daddy” caught a Sailfish, a Blue Marlin, several Yellowfin and a couple Dorado.
Captain Jorge on the “Barrilata” did a half day trip about 15 miles out and caught 4 Dorado…a couple 30 pounds and a couple 20 pounds.

Captain RJ ran the “Tres Amigos” and caught 7 Sailfish and a couple Dorado.
The guys on the “Dream 2″ caught a big big Yellowfin Tuna…rumored over 200 pounds.

Captain Kevin on the “Hoo’s Up” caught 2 Sailfish and 2 Mahi Mahi.

Captain Dave on the “Missbehavin” took Dave the dental patient out for a day in the rain…they did catch a couple sailfish and a few dorado.

June Fish Forecast --

Look for June to be similar to the first 3 weeks of May. It will probably take a week or two for the water to clean up but the guys that do go out will continue to average a few Sailfish, some dorado, some tuna and maybe a marlin if there karma is good.

They boats may need to run farther until the chocolate brown water disappears…look for the bite to past 30 miles.

June Fish of the Month – Dorado, Mahi Mahi, Dolphin fish

Over the next few months there will be lots of Dorado caught on the Pacific coast.

With the rains comes the debris washes out into the ocean. In time this debris acts as cover and attracts game fish.

Dorado from 5 to 75 pounds can be found in and around floating logs, cargo nets and trash lines.

Where there is one Dorado there are usually more. It’s not uncommon to catch a dozen fish if you get into a good bunch. The big ones run in smaller groups usually a big bull Dorado with a couple of lady friends.

Dorado are great fighters and lots of fun to catch. If you’ve never been out fishing or want to fish on a budget now is the time to get out for a half day of Dorado fishing. Grab a few friends and go fishing…prices start at $450 and include drinks and snacks.

The best part of Dorado fishing is having a fish taco night with your fresh caught Mahi Mahi….mmmmm….delicious.

Good Luck and Good Fishing,

Bubba

Costa Rica Fishing Report - Los Suenos Marina - April 2008

April Fishing Report

April started out as March ended…HOT, HOT, HOT. Everyone was fishing about 30 miles out and they were raising and releasing double digit Sailfish numbers…mixed in with a few Dorado.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” went 16 for 22 on Sailfish and had 5 Sailfish and a Dorado hooked up at the same time…a sixer?

Captain Dave on the “Missbehavin” took Lou and his buddy out again today the clients hooked their own fish and they ripped it up going 15 for 30 on Sailfish with a couple big Dorado for dinner.

The second week of April the bite shifted far to the south and guys were running 40-45 miles and crushing it.

The guys on the “Spanish Fly” took a crew from Michigan out and in true “Spanish Fly” fashion released 24 Sailfish and a Marlin.

Bob from Jersey wanted to hook his own fish on the “Fish Whistle”…Captain Brandon did not disappoint. They went south and Bob went 7 for 15 on Sailfish and caught a 50 pound Bull Dorado. Bob admitted that fishing with the circle hooks was something new. It’s hard to undo years of hook setting instinct.

There were one or two slow days around the middle of the month and then bite picked up again but this time just 30 miles out. The bite continued to be good until the very end of the month. The last few days of the month were slow…but the fish are still out there.

Captain Kevin on the “Hoo’s your Daddy” went 8 for 14 on Sailfish about 30 some miles South.

Captain Jeremy on the “R&J” went 7 for 20 on Sails with a couple 30 pound Dorado and a nice Striped Marlin.

Captain Tim on the “Tres Amigos” may have the catch of the week…maybe even month with a 750 plus pound Black Marlin. Tim and the boys were fishing the “26″ when the hawg came tight. They estimated the fish at 17 plus feet. The “26″ area has a history of big Blacks…this is one more for the list.

Captain George on the “Barrilata” went out about 30 miles with Mike and his wife from North Carolina. They caught 2 Sailfish, a “3 foot long” Mahi Mahi and a 300 pound Black Marlin…not bad for some panga guys. Mike said a 20 inch Grouper was the largest fish he has ever caught. Mike was very very happy, showing everyone in the hotel lobby his photos…he admitted that Marlin whooped his ass.

May Fish Forecast --

Look for May will be similar to April. The Sailfish are still around. The boats will run a little farther and fish a little harder and catch fewer fish.

The good news is mixed in with those fewer Sailfish bites will be more Marlin, Tuna and big Dorado.

April Fish of the Month – Sailfish

Public pressure is helping to save the Dolphins and Turtles. We need to use public pressure to help save the Sailfish and Marlin…PLEASE HELP.

1.2 million pounds of Sailfish and Marlin was processed though Costa Rica fish wholesalers in 2006.

Now there is a group in Costa Rica that wants to allow commercial fishing boats to kill more Sailfish and Marlin.

We need people to speak out and send a fax to the President of Costa Rica.

We helped save the Dolphins, we helped save the Turtles and we need to help save the Billfish.

Please take 5 minutes and send a fax encouraging the Costa Rican President to prohibit the commercial fishing of Sailfish and Marlin.

Oscar Arias - President of Costa Rica - personal fax
Fax in Costa Rica # 2253-9078
From the USA #011-506-2253-9078

Fax a letter in today or stop by bubba’s and sign a form letter and I will fax them all in.

Costa Rica Fishing Report...bite still good

Hola,

A couple days after the full moon and the bite is still good out of the Los Suenos Marina. The bite moved out some so the guys are having to run a little farther…about 40 miles yesterday. Everyone is catching fish and it’s been a mixed bag of mainly Sailfish with a few Marlin and Mahi Mahi.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” went 8 for 12 with the James B. party fishing 40 miles out. I think they were all Sailfish Virgins…not any more. They are fishing with Bill again on the 24th…go get em boys.

Captain Jeremy took Willis and some friends out offshore…they had a OK day. They released 2 Sailfish but lost 3 more Sails, a big Mahi Mahi and a Marlin. Ifs and buts were candy and nuts.

Captain Kevin on the “Hoo’s Up” released 7 Sailfish lost a nice Mahi Mahi and raised a little Blue or Striped Marlin.

Thanks

Bubba

Costa Rica Fishing Report...Los Suenos Marina

Hola,

The bite out of the Los Suenos Marina has slowed to some average numbers. A week ago the bite was out west and then a few days ago it moved to the south and now it seems to be scattered. For the past two days most of the boats have been running 30 and 40 miles but not pulling the huge Sailfish numbers that we have had the past month. Most of the boats today seemed to run hard and slug it out for 2 or 3 fish.

Yesterday Captain Carlos on the “R&J” took Brain and his buddy offshore and caught 3 Sailfish, a Mahi Mahi and a Marlin.

Yesterday Captain Tim on the “Tres Amigos” pulled 3 deuces with 2 Sailfish, 2 Mahi Mahi and 2 Striped Marlin over 200 pounds. Today they took Steve and his buddies out and went 1 for 7 on Sailfish. The Captain went 42 miles and fished hard for those fish…sometimes they bite aggressively and sometimes they don’t.

Yesterday Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” released 8 Sailfish and kept a 45 pound Dorado for the grill. Today Captain Bill went 5 for 8 on Sailfish…he was out about 40 miles.

When the bite is 40 miles out the half day charters are forced to fish inshore. The Inshore Fishing has been good the past week…with everyone catching some Roosterfish mixed in with some Amber Jacks, Cubera Snapper and Grouper.

Thanks for your time,

Bubba

Howdy, The Sailfish bite out of Los Suenos Marina was good to some and hard work for others the past few days. Everyone is still catching Sailfish, most of the boats are picking up a Dorado or two and some of the lucky ones are getting a shot at a Marlinno reports of the delicious Yellowfin Tuna. Yesterday Captain Bill on the Sailfish released 17 Sailfishhe said a 50 pound Bull Dorado crashed the spread but didnt get hooked up. The clients were not disappointed. Yesterday Captain Kevin on the Hoos your Daddy went 11 for 18 on Sailfish and picked up a couple nice Dorado for dinner. The Captain said they fished 38 miles out. That was yesterday...today the bite moved way south. Today Captain Dana on the Hoos your Daddy fished with a long time customer from Florida. The bite was slow and they worked hard to find fish and by the end of the day the angler caught his first ever Marlin and his largest Sailfish ever at 150 pounds.congrats. Captain Dana did some bottom fishing yesterday near the rock using butterfly jigs, they caught a 30 pound and 55 pound Broomtail Grouper. When I called Dana and some of the boys were cooking up a big slab of Grouper and having a couple cold beersif it wasnt a 30 minute drive I would go up there and chow Danas wife Laura makes some killer grubits the drive home from Danas that will get ya. Captain Dave on the 'Missbehavin' went 2 for 4 on Sailfish and wasn't happy with his efforts. The guys on the Spanish Fly took a crew from Michigan out and in true Spanish Fly fashion released 24 Sailfish and a Marlin. They fished way south and crushed it. Captain Daniel and his guys can catch some fish and they can be a curve buster. Catching 24 fish when everyone else is catching 6 is just not rightthey are like the smart kid in class that everybody hated. Captain George on the Barrilatta out of Herradura Bay took the Esterillos gang out yesterday. They went 2 for 10 on Sailfish. Two for ten on Sailfish. Those days happen when you try and set your own hooks. I personally would rather hook one fish and hand it off then reel in ten fish after someone else has hooked it. My next project is Costa Rica Fishing Schoolwell teach you to set your own hook. http://www.costaricafishingreport.com/fishingschool .shtml Thanks, Bubba 1-800-9SAILFISH

Captain Dave on the Missbehavin took Lou and his buddy out again today and they ripped it up going 15 for 30 on Sailfish with a couple big Dorado for dinner. Thanks, Bubba 1-800-9SAILFISH
